Off to See the Wizard

The boys and I packed a picnic lunch and headed over to Glen Echo Puppet Company to watch a daytime showing of The Wizard of Oz. The Puppets were beautiful hand-carved marionettes. What I've always enjoyed about marionette shows are that the actors are typically on stage, in the light, in full view right along with the puppets. Which means they have to walk a fine line between being in character yet not detracting attention away from the characters controlled by their hands. When we arrived at the theater we were each handed a program with the 4 marionette characters on front. Andrew spent the entire time prior to the show learning their names (Dorothy, Lion, Tin Man & Scarecrow).
He would run back and forth from his seat on the floor to my seat with the parents and perform a roll call of sorts with the pictures on the program. By the time the show started he had them down. The characters were introduced one at a time, Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man first. When the Lion took too long to make an appearance Andrew raced up to me asking "Where's Wion?" Weh-heh-ell, when the Lion finally made his grand debut Andrew was clearly the most thrilled in the audience whispering in loud voice "Ah! It's the Wion! Look Mom! It's the Wion!" The hour long show continued to entertain and mesmerize my active boys right up to the very end at which point we headed outside for a ride on the vintage carousal followed by a picnic on an overlook to the Minnehaha Creek.
