"We may run, walk, stumble, drive, or fly, but let us never lose sight of the reason for the journey, or miss a chance to see a rainbow on the way."
Having lived a significant portion of my life happily on fast-forward, it now pleases me to pause and catch sight of that 'rainbow [along] the way'. I still have to make a conscious effort to slow down and be mindful but I am motivated to teach the art of mindfulness to my children. I am by no means an expert but I do try to be an example for them in this artform. I don't want them to rush so fast through life that they forget to capture and remember the moments. Thank goodness I have a mother who is "mindful" as she frequently reminds me of my own "memories" that I have somehow forgotten. I hastily rushed through college, moved to a big city, got a masters and went after some ambitious physical goals (e.g. running a marathon) trying to cram it all in before it was too late. There was so much to do I could not wait to try and do it all. I now know I could have slowed down a bit and still accomplished these things while allowing for some pauses to enjoy the ride and to remember the details. Anyhow, all this leads me to today of trying to be a more mindful individual, particularly in my parenting, and to try to instill that quality in my own children.
On this journey of parenthood, I am grateful for the little rainbows that pop up into our lives, namely in the form of childhood friendships which, more often than not, pave the way for parent friendships (bonus!). Having started a new school this year, I am quite pleased with the friendships being formed in the 1st grade classrooms. Here is a shot of Brandon and one of his newest little mates. They happily spend their free afternoons constructing Lego cities, building tree forts and dressing up in old Halloween costumes pretending to be ninjas & Superheroes (Note the Spiderman glove in the photo below).
Here's to childhood friendships and to never missing a chance to see a rainbow along the way!
